Job Description

Microsoft Quantum has assembled a talented and diverse international team to create the world’s first scalable quantum computing system.  Microsoft’s verticalized approach involves exciting innovations at every level, from the qubit device and quantum information plane, to the quantum-classical interface and classical compute system, all the way up to the system software, applications and global services.  Microsoft Quantum will change the world of computing and help solve some of humankind’s currently unsolvable problems.

Responsibilities

Are you a Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) systems engineer with in-depth know-how of material synthesis and with a passion to drive innovation towards a profound impact in technology?  Then you might be the right candidate for an exciting role as part of a global team of physicists, material scientists, mechanical engineers and software developers which will define the new field of Quantum Computing!

Microsoft is investing in the future of Quantum Computing, including theory, hardware, and software. As a part of this effort we are developing fabrication hardware dedicated for quantum material fabrication for building the qubit plane of a quantum computer. We are on the cusp of an ambitious and accelerated effort in quantum computing and this position is an opportunity to get in at the start of this new intense phase.

We are seeking a UHV engineers with crystal growth expertise and with in-depth understanding of nanoscale material and electronic device fabrication. The position will be based at the new Microsoft Quantum Materials Laboratory (MQML), Lyngby, Denmark - 10km north of Copenhagen.

Key Responsibilities include:

The successful candidate will be developing advanced UHV fabrication hardware and/or crystal growth processes that lead to novel high-quality quantum materials, devices and qubits. The candidate is expected to participate in the development, operation and maintenance of the in-situ fabrication hardware based on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system technology, as well as taking part in the hardware design improvements based on in-depth knowledge of ultra-high vacuum design principles.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have:

  • An in-depth understanding of the operation and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum systems, such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy or related systems.
  • In-depth know-how on materials synthesis, preferably synthesis of quantum materials by Molecular Beam Epitaxy.
  • Experience with thermal, structural and vibration analysis.
  • Experience with nano-fabrication and general cleanroom practices.
  • An advanced degree in Physics, Material Science or allied discipline.
  • Successful candidates must demonstrate meticulous attention to detail combined with creativity, and a willingness to work in a dynamic team environment.
