The HKUST is hiring a Technical Manager (Auditorium) for its Shaw Auditorium targeted to open in 2021. Reporting initially to the Director of MTPC, the appointee will liaise with various parties to oversee the acquisition and installation of equipment and facilities for the multi-purpose Shaw Auditorium and will be in charge of the technical support for University events, performances, digital arts programs and exhibitions to be held in the Auditorium and other HKUST exhibitions and performance venues.
The ideal candidate should possess professional knowledge in performing and entertainment venue operations as well as technologies for exhibition space design and multi-sensory enhancement for presentations and seminars. Experience in providing technical support for Digital and Modern Art exhibitions or performing programs is a plus. Major duties of the appointee include:
- Leading/coordinating/overseeing a small technical team to provide AV setup, digital arts and media production support for all programs and events held in the Shaw Auditorium and HKUST venues;
- Supporting back-of-house, on-stage production, and all venue-related matters;
- Managing back-of-house operations and maintaining performance facilities and theatre equipment;
- Proposing emerging technologies for stage performances, events and exhibition curating; and
- Providing professional advice and solutions on technical issues to event organizers, production team and venue users, both internal and external.
Applicants should:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree (or similar qualifications) in digital media or audio-visual systems engineering with specialization in theatre and performance or digital arts;
- Have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in technical support in professional performing/multi-purpose venue(s), of which 5 years are at supervisory level;
- Have extensive knowledge of theatrical systems, including lighting, sound, rigging and digital media production setup;
- Have practical knowledge of modern theatre production techniques and technologies, be able to create and interpret theatre plans and design drawings and to oversee productions from plan to completion;
- Have practical knowledge on modern digital Audio and Video technology, including Dante, AES67, AVB, HDBaseT, AV over IP streaming, be able to understand and comment corresponding modern AV system designs;
- Be able to both lead and work with a team of technical staff to complete tasks on time and within budget;
- Possess good interpersonal and communication skills; and
- Be proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese.

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
