The Opportunity
Various macroeconomic and budget-related challenges are hampering effective public financial management. To address these challenges, governments are introducing reforms to improve fiscal transparency. As part of our US GPS team, you will join a talented group of professionals to help governments and public sector organizations improve planning, budgetary and financial performance, and to meet public transparency and accountability requirements.
Your Key Responsibilities
As one of our finance leaders, you’ll help crucial state and local government departments and agencies continuously achieve and sustain performance improvement in a rapidly changing environment. Working in multidisciplinary teams, often directly with leaders of major organizations, you’ll bring diverse perspectives to every challenge. We'll help you achieve your potential by supporting your professional development and by providing you with leadership opportunities.
Key responsibilities of the position include:
- Participating in and leading Finance engagements, including ERP implementations
- Managing financial, risk and quality aspects of client engagements
- Communicating issues, status and thought leadership to partners and clients
- Building relationships with external clients and internal peers to generate new business opportunities
- Understanding EY service offerings and providing subject-matter insight to bids, proposals, and service delivery execution
- Building, managing and motivating high-performing teams, including supporting people-related initiatives (e.g., recruitment, retention, training, competency development)
- Developing people through effective supervision, coaching, mentoring and performance assessment of all levels of staff

- Ability to build, manage and motivate high-performing teams, including supporting people-related initiatives (e.g., recruitment, retention, training, competency development)
- Proactive collaborator who can organize and hold an initial C-suite conversation across all key offerings and business areas while have deep delivery experience in at least one key client business area
- Ability to develop people through effective leadership, coaching, mentoring and performance assessment of all levels
To qualify for the role you must have
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and approximately eight years of relevant work experience or a master’s degree with an emphasis on Finance, Accounting, Public Administration or other related field and approximately six years of relevant work experience.
- Minimum of six years relevant experience in state and/or local financial management
- Originated from either Pension fund client, Big 4 or boutique consulting firm with strong existing relationships to CalPERS / CalSTRS C-suite to accelerate “opening the door”
- Preferred coverage and project experience across at least two of the following areas of a typical pension client: pension operations, management, pension administration and pension investments
- Preparing complex written or verbal materials (e.g., legislative reports, budget justifications, leadership briefings)
- Presenting complex issues to executives
- Leading multiple teams
- Providing formal feedback.
- Knowledge and experience in state or local budgeting (formulation or execution)
Ideally, you’ll also have
- Willingness to relocate to the specific geographic area that will be under your purview; we are currently most interested in the following markets: Albany, Atlanta, Tallahassee, Phoenix and Sacramento
- Deep experience in at least one functional area (e.g., Finance, HR, IT)
