State and Local Government and Education – Education - Senior Manager

When you join our GPS team as a senior manager focused on education, you will have the opportunity to be part of building out our higher education practice and to make a real difference in the higher education sector. The sector is experiencing tremendous pressures, exacerbated by COVID-19, but it also has tremendous opportunity: to redefine its business model; how it serves students; how it manages decision-making in a complex, multistakeholder environment; and how it works with both government and corporate partners to continue to be an important engine of economic growth for the country. You will have the opportunity to be part of this transformation. While building and nurturing relationships with higher education institutions, systems and statewide entities, you will also have the opportunity to work across disciplines with professionals who have broad industry sector experience and deep subject-matter knowledge. As a member of our GPS team, you will join a talented group of professionals serving in key roles advising public and nonprofit organizations on issues related to financial management, performance improvement, program effectiveness, and technology and operational transformation. Your Key Responsibilities 
Your key responsibilities as a senior manager on the SLED team includes serving as a key resource in: 
 
  • Managing the day-to-day activities in support of building relationships throughout higher education organizations in a particular geographic area 
  • Connecting relevant parts of EY (other professionals whose competencies may be required by the needs of prospective or current clients) to higher education clients 
  • Driving growth/sales across your accounts  
  • Eventually, driving delivery activities (either leading projects for accounts in your geographic area or serving as a subject-matter resource on teams working with these accounts) 
 
We anticipate that, initially (in the first 18–24 months), up to 80% of your time would involve new-business development, origination activities and capture efforts. Over time, we anticipate that 50% of your time will be focused on delivering on new business sold to your client(s).  You will contribute to project delivery by overseeing, participating in and reviewing the parameters of the consulting work under contract, participating in resource planning and development and managing both contract and client expectations.      
 
Skills and attributes for Success 
Key capabilities that you should be prepared to bring to client-facing and internal teams include:  
  • Entrepreneurial mindset – be excited about, and energized by, being part of building a larger practice  
  • Experience working in and/or with various higher education organizations to include policy, operational process, organizational design and technology platforms as either an employee within the higher education sector, an outside vendor or both; organizations related to higher education include, but are not limited to, individual institutions (public or private), university system offices, state departments of higher education and higher education coordinating boards 
  • Demonstration of working knowledge and aptitude in some of our key capabilities (e.g., Program Management Office functions, project oversight and management, process improvement, operating model design and implementation, applicable industry platforms and technologies, IT general and application controls, risk management, information security and information assurance 
  • Encouragement and facilitation of collaboration among team members; promoting an inclusive environment 
  • Effective organization and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and adhere to project deadlines 
  • Ability to lead certain client projects from planning through to execution 
  • Contributions to business development and client pursuit activities by preparing proposals, marketing presentations for potential clients and thought leadership brochures 
  • Strong communication skills, translating into the ability to communicate issues, status, and thought leadership effectively to partners and clients 
  • Ability to build impactful relationships with key influencers to effectively manage work and generate new business opportunities 
  • Ability to share leading practices and insights about current industry or subject-matter topics with EY US leaders, proposal teams and clients 
  • Ability to build, manage and motivate high-performing teams, including supporting people-related initiatives (e.g., recruitment, retention, training, competency development) 
  • Ability to develop people through effective leadership, coaching, mentoring and performance assessment of all levels 
 
To qualify for the role you must have 
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and approximately eight years of recent consulting or relevant industry experience (with at least four years in either an operating role in a higher education setting or as a consultant leading projects and managing teams for higher education clients), with the ability to show a significant client impact and results, or a master’s degree and six years of relevant work experience. 
 
Knowledge and experience in the following areas: 
  • Demonstrated career progression (increasingly senior or more complex roles) 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams on complex assignments and develop individual team members 
  • Strong quantitative skills to supervise data analysis, interpret output and generate insights 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop long-term client relationships and a portfolio of new business 
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Willingness and ability to travel to and from client site(s) (approximately 50%); this role would be responsible for a specific geographic area (e.g., Florida, Georgia, Texas, California) 
 
Ideally, you’ll also have 
  • Willingness to relocate to the specific geographic area that will be under your purview; we are currently most interested in the following markets: Florida (with the possibility of also covering Georgia), California and Texas 
  • Deep experience in at least one functional area (e.g., Finance, HR, IT)
