Summary:

This position reports to the Manager of User Experience (UX) & Human Factors (HF) Engineering within Renal Innovation.  HF and UX engineers at Baxter are recognized internally and externally as experts with a track record of applying HF principles to deliver best-in-class user experiences. The individuals plan, schedule, and lead user needs gathering and design efforts. They also develop and strategize for efficiency in user experience by applying knowledge of best practice UX to solve complex problems on cross-functional teams for product and project stakeholders (management, marketing, and engineering).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The specific duties and responsibilities may vary per level of role; however, across all of the levels, the following key responsibilities are essential for a successful Human Factor Engineer at Baxter:

  • Plan and execute user needs gathering exercises including observational studies, ethnographic research, and interviews.
  • Perform task analyses, develop workflows, and specify ergonomic limits to assist in the development of product requirements.
  • Assess use-related risk, generate and evaluate designs, develop hardware, specify GUI features, and iterate product concepts.
  • Actively participate on innovation and product development program teams to ensure sound human factors principles are considered, documented, and implemented.
  • Create and communicate project plans, tasks and deliverables, and manage time to meet project deadlines. This includes reporting pertinent information at key milestones through clear, concise oral and written communications.
  • Applies hands-on skills in usability testing and measurement in areas of hardware, software, and disposable products.
  • Design and execute tests to simulate product use for validating product performance, reliability, and usability.

Education and Background:

  • Bachelor’s in Human Factors Engineering (HFE), or equivalent degree plus a minimum of 10 years of human factors experience; or Master’s or PhD in Human Factors Engineering (HFE), or equivalent degree plus a minimum 4-8 years of human factors experience.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in HFE principles - ergonomics, human computer / machine interface, and data collection / analysis methodologies.
  • Proven experience in the effective implementation of HFE requirements /standards.
  • Proven experience in performing usability studies (formative/summative) and use-related risk analysis.
  • Ability to solve HFE problems with minimal assistance.
  • Ability to decompose complex problems into actionable task lists.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership for HFE projects with substantial complexity and scope.
  • Demonstrated ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied functions (i.e. Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, etc.)
  • Demonstrated understanding of user centered design, heuristic evaluations, design of experiments, and statistical analysis.
  • Proven communication skills and ability to perform within a cross-functional team environment.
  • Ability to drive change initiatives.
  • Experience with FDA regulated environment and/or medical products/healthcare applications.
