What you’ll do

  • Support the practical delivery of projects and execute studies which establish a proof of concept, including biomarker analysis with imaging technologies, and manage  pathology and quality control aspects of a project. Integrate data on new compounds and information on disease pathology to establish a proof of the scientific theory behind biomarkers with computational pathology methods

  • Have a significant impact on the biomedical quality of the project by providing tissue and pathology knowledge, interpreting results and solving problems with innovative solutions

  • Deliver high quality annotations of whole slide images by independently directing and performing the generation of ground truth and the visual control of image analysis algorithms in line with broader projects

  • Provide input and pathology expertise to support the design of imaging biomarker analysis studies, including the optimization of laboratory assays for image analysis and their validation

  • Assist in the development of improved analytical and computational techniques and applications to allow the department to support more projects in collaboration with engineers and software developers

  • Collaborate and communicates with the team to ensure efficient transfer of data

  • Keep up-to-date on scientific discoveries and advances and share relevant information with the rest of the team

  • Contribute to determining the viability of projects as a valued team member and provide biology and pathology expertise on specific issues

  • Have significant input into project resourcing decisions and the allocation of work, including the coordination of external workers

  • Provide advice and training (including guidelines) to less experienced peers and to project team members to improve their slide reading and biomarker assessment skills

  • Ensure own work, and work of peers, is compliant with General Laboratory Standard and/or Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulation

Essential for the role

  • Medical (M.D.), veterinary degree (D.V.M.) or PhD in Life science with experience in pathology and tissue-related analysis

  • Significant experience in tissue biomarker analysis (preferably, in pharmaceutical/diagnostic industry)

  • General knowledge in tissue diagnostics (histology, cytology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, molecular pathology, genetics)

  • Experience with digital pathology methods and applications is required

  • Experience in cancer diagnostics

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong team working skills

  • Ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders
