What you'll do:

  • Develop, implement and support pathology informatics solutions grounded in the area of image analysis and computational pathology designed to drive the interrogation of datasets for insights in scientific and clinical application areas within defined project scope. This includes the management and integration of data from multiple sources and modalities (e.g. imaging data, multi-omics, patient and sample (meta)data, real world evidence, clinical trials, image and data analysis results and the quality control of image analysis algorithms.  

  • Ensure the quality of data and support the validation of computational and analytical methods to solve problems in the area of biomarker quantification on whole slide images aligned to the overall functional policies and standards through appropriate data management (pooling, splitting, curation, analysis) and quality control.  

  • Research and develop new software tools and approaches which guide decision-making within project parameters to improve efficiency, establish FAIR principles and promote automation and scalability.  

  • Build effective relationships with established range of stakeholders (such as machine learning and data scientists, data wranglers and engineers, software developers and clinical and biological researchers) to ensure utilization and value of information resources and services. Clearly and objectively communicate results, as well as their associate uncertainties and limitations.  

  • Develop, implement and maintain required tools and algorithms in a manner which meets regulatory and evidential requirements within the defined project scope.  

  • Develop, maintain and apply ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, standard methodology and new developments in data management and quality control for computational pathology.  

  • Implement and own working practices and related trainings to ensure that image analysis algorithms and automated scoring methods are delivered to robust quality standards in close collaboration with Quality Management and IT.  

  • Generate high-quality ground truth on whole slide images to support the development of machine learning algorithms under pathologist supervision.  

  • Provide biology, tissue and biomarker knowledge to support the development of laboratory assays optimized for image analysis.

Essential for the role 

  • Master / PhD (or equivalent years of experience) in mathematics, computer science, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, computational biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline  

  • At least 2 years of experience in relevant application domain (e.g. cell and molecular biology, disease progression and clinical treatment, RWE, biochemistry, digital pathology)  

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English  

  • Experience in working with data generated from microscopy-based techniques is expected 

  • Practical experience in software development using Python and/or R in the field of data curation, database access, or quality control is required. Knowledge about visual dashboard programming is a plus.  

  • Good understanding of quality control processes and the used metrics is expected. Understanding of the design, development, optimization, and scaling of informatics applications and solutions is desirable, including the management of software and related data in software repositories such as Github.  

  • Experience with assay optimization and digital slide scanning is beneficial  

  • Comfortable working in high performance computing or cloud environment is desirable  

  • Understanding of lab workflows, IHC assay optimization and biomarker science in drug development is desirable  

  • Excellent MS Office skills, especially Word and Excel (previous experience working with databases / image analysis software beneficial)  

  • Excellent business analysis, and consultancy skills are desirable
