What you’ll do

  • Provide pathological expertise and scientific leadership in the development and implementation of computational pathology solutions to support early and late-stage clinical drug development and drive AstraZeneca leadership in the application of computational pathology

  • Lead and provide strategic steer and support to imaging operations teams for expert or quality review of histopathology images, QC report review and general histopathology questions

  • Participate and contribute technical and strategic expertise as member of cross functional project teams in the design, validation and construction of training and validation data to develop computational pathology capabilities and applications.

  • Collaborate with high-functioning multidisciplinary teams to analyze and interpret data, especially in context with other clinical data and drive the multimodal integration of pathology data with other data sources

  • Support software development teams in the development of image/data analysis solutions and products, the digital pathology portal platform through active participation in the testing of these tools and technology

  • Attend scientific meetings as active member of the computational pathology community, publish scientific results, and contribute to educational seminars

  • Develop strategic and research partnerships with leading academics and leverage the pathology KOL network

  • Lead, direct and advocate for the Pathology department:

    • Drive improvement of team efforts, uphold scientific rigor of processes and deliverables, ensure high quality and efficiency of workflows, and communications

    • Conduct performance reviews, further employee growth, and ensure infrastructure needs are proactively met for the team personnel

    • Identify and recruit talent, set and communicate team / individual objectives to achieve high performance and regularly report to the Translational Medicine leadership team on the progress

    • Oversee and deliver internal training as needed with relation to histopathology and assist with the development of support materials

    • Keep up to date with changes in medical and scientific training and standards and provide expert advice with regard to the development of digital pathology and provide leadership for the recommendation, adoption, and implementation of new technologies

    • Conduct all work under applicable regulatory guidelines; read, review, and comply with company SOPs, company best practices and company policies

Essential for the role

  • MD with anatomic pathology specialty board certification or eligibility required (active medical license not required). The MD is a must-have requirement. Therefore, please refrain from applying if you are not an MD.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a global pharmaceutical industry in Translational Sciences and / or Clinical Development with demonstrated successful track record

  • Experience in pathology and clinical informatics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence as applied to digital pathology research or practice required

  • Experience in applying digital tissue analysis techniques for immuno-histochemistry, multiplex immuno-fluorescence, and/or spatial-omics approaches

  • Interest in developing cutting edge computational pathology approaches

  • Proven expertise at engaging scientific leaders and other key stakeholders

  • Ability to lead and collaborate in cross-functional teams in an international matrix environment

  • Strong leadership skills with ability to influence laterally

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to build strong relationships internally and externally

  • Knowledge of clinical trial methodology and regulatory requirements
