Our West Chester Supply Site is a very dynamic and growing manufacturing site within the AstraZeneca Global Operations network and is located just north of Cincinnati, Ohio.  In addition to serving as the global COVID vaccine production site for AstraZeneca, the West Chester site encompasses Bulk API Microsphere manufacturing, Aseptic Pharmaceutical Formulation, multi-line Isolator/Barrier Vial and Syringe Filling, and specialty Packaging Operations for Vials and Auto-Injectors that supports growing franchises in Diabetes, Respiratory, and Vaccines.  Our site is one of 30 production facilities in 18 countries with over 700 people collaborating to connect powerful medications to patients in more than 60 countries around the world.    We focus on providing a collaborative environment where everyone feels comfortable and able to be themselves.  Being able to bring your full self to work every day is at the core of AstraZeneca’s priorities. The Safety Specialist provides regulatory expertise, coaching and hands-on support to drive safety and health compliance. The position delivers regulatory and company safety training and applies requirements site-wide. It works and liaises with all levels of AstraZeneca (AZ) employees, external agencies and peers throughout the company to improve health and safety performance.  The position has site-wide programmatic scope and influences AZ personnel, contractors, emergency preparedness and incident investigation teams. There are no direct reports associated with the position.

What you'll do:

Monday-Friday role

  • Implements, improves, and manages Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) programs, procedures and practices.
  • Assists line management in addressing safety and health issues regarding OSHA, behavioral safety and AZ standards.
  • Site subject matter expert for questions about, and compliance with, all assigned SHE Department programs.
  • Reviews, interprets, and clarifies legal requirements applicable to the manufacturing site, and takes initiative to ensure site programs align with requirements.
  • Understands management systems, and works with operations, maintenance, engineering and other support teams to deliver programs that fulfill requirements and deliver performance results.  Will co-own Safety Management System.
  • Provides expertise, coaching, and support to the operations, maintenance, engineering and other site support teams.
  • Manages assigned safety programs and procedures, monitors conformance and intervenes to improve performance.
  • Leads and participates in risk assessments to identify hazards, potential impacts, and agreement of appropriate risk management measures.
  • Develops and delivers safety training and new programs to address OSHA requirements, AZ standards, and site Safety and Health policies, programs and procedures.
  • Participates on incident management and emergency response teams as requested.
  • Interacts with external regulatory agencies and auditors.
  • Networks with peers across the corporation to ensure consistency of interpretation and shares best practices.
  • Provides Health and Safety support, consultation and expertise to turnarounds, Capital and other projects. This support includes the development of Safety & Health plans, facilitating safety meetings, and tracking Safety performance.
  • Public speaking in a town hall-type of employee setting periodically, is a must.
  • Analyzes site safety data and trends, communicates results, and recommends interventions to improve performance.

Essential for the role:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) required in Occupational Safety or related field.
  • 5 years of work experience in Occupational Safety, preferably in a manufacturing setting, is required.
