As Product Manager, you will be charged with a revenue line contribution to the Knowledge Solutions business unit. This extends from increasing the profitability of existing products to developing new products for the organisation.

 

You will build products from existing ideas, and help to develop new ideas based on industry insight and your contact with customers and prospects. You must possess a blend of business and technical savvy. You must enjoy spending time in the market to understand customers and their problems, and find innovative solutions for the broader market.

 

You must be able to communicate with all areas of the company. During this 12 month FTC, you will work with marketing, sales and pricing colleagues to define the go-to-market strategy, helping them understand the product positioning, key benefits, and target customer. You will also serve as the internal and external evangelist for your product offering, occasionally working with the sales channel and key customers.

 

A product manager's key role is strategic, not tactical. However, you will need to respond to tactical demands as needed.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Ownership of product lifecycle, strategy and development roadmaps for a your online products. The PM will develop and gain approval for each strategy/roadmap and project manage cross-functional teams to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Playing a key role in the initiation, business approval, specification, development and delivery of new products and services. Creation and ownership of business plans, project documentation, customer communications and financial business cases.
  • Customer insight and market research activity to underpin all decisions made in the definition and development of product. Activities will include formal customer and market research, competitor analysis, requirements gathering, customer visits and representation at trade shows and exhibitions.
  • Close liaison with the technical development team to translate customer requirements into functional specifications and active participation in the development, launch and on-going enhancement of your products.
  • Working within cross-functional project teams formed from all streams of the BSI business – Standards Development, IT, Content Solutions, Sales, Marketing and Customer Support – to drive effective delivery of product to meet customer need.
  • Providing product positioning and benefit statements for use by sales & marketing. As product champion, the PM will provide training and supporting material to customer facing colleagues (sales, support and training).
  • Continuous review of business performance and pricing, ensuring competitiveness, profitability and value for customers.
  • Assume shared responsibility for the compliance with and governance of product management processes across the Standards and Publishing business.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Commercial performance against agreed measures (e.g. Revenue growth, renewal rates, customer engagement, customer satisfaction) of products in personal portfolio.
  • Delivery of products or enhancements against agreed project milestones

Dimensions

  • As part of the commercial group, the PM will ensure that both the BSI strategy and the “voice of the customer” are always represented in the cross-functional teams in which they participate.
  • The role will, with support from the finance team, manage the financial spend on delivery and track the commercial performance of products
  • Accountable for product delivery, the role will project manage internal groups responsible for content initiation, editorial production, technology development, customer support, sales and marketing.
  • Where technical delivery is handled by BSI’s Group IT team, the PM will manage the project from a wider business perspective and liaise closely with the technical delivery team to ensure success.
  • As the priority of the role is to deliver product that meets the needs of our customers, the role will also involve regular customer-facing activities such as management of customer research, customer visits, presentations at trade shows.
  • BSI delivers products to many different groups (eg industry, academia, SMEs, etc) so the role will need to consider both these different groups and BSI’s standing as the National Standards Body in the UK.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Must Have:

  • Direct product development experience with online information products/services for professional audiences.
  • Experience of customer research and gathering and prioritising customer requirements for information products.
  • Experience working with technical teams to articulate business requirements and support delivery and testing of digital products.

 

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working in the STM publishing industry
  • Knowledge of creating integrated, multi-content products
  • Formal training or certification in Product Management
  • Working knowledge of software development methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, Scrum)
