Summary

Applies a solid understanding of theories/practices utilized by the primary area of expertise toward the development of new or enhanced products or therapies. Plans, executes and functionally directs important engineering assignments, which require independent judgment. Effectively applies standard engineering principles with focus on mechanical design, experimental and computational fluid dynamics; heat and mass transfer to resolve difficult problems, from early exploration to final design with team input.

Job Description:

  • Devises new approaches to complex problems through application and adaptation state-of-the-art techniques in the area of expertise, with focus on experimental and computational fluid dynamics; and heat and mass transfer
  • Creates innovative solutions that address patient and clinician needs following Standford’s BioDesign process
  • Generate and leverage existing and new intellectual property for new therapy and/or clinical use. Also, authors articles in journals and contribute to scientific literature and conferences
  • As a good team player, share research outcomes, methodology and cycle-time reduction methods with team members and other divisional personnel
  • Supervises/coordinates an engineer and/or technicians on assigned work
  • Schedules and leads a team through the planning and execution of a medium size project. This includes constructing detailed, accurate project schedules, interfacing with product development, quality, manufacturing and information technology
  • Create and communicate project plans, tasks and deliverables and manage time to meet project deadlines. This includes reporting pertinent information at key milestones through clear, concise oral and written communications.
  • Engage in personal and continuing program of learning in order to broaden knowledge to gain knowledge in new fields of general engineering and/or therapy areas in order to improve the individual effectiveness and to avoid technical obsolescence

Job Requirements:

  • Display a solid understanding of theories/practices utilized by primary area of expertise.
  • Proven experience in experimental and computational fluid dynamics; heat and mass transfer, rheology, design of experiments, optimization
  • Expert in the use of Ansys Fluent and other tools, i.e. Creo (Pro Engineer), AMESim, Matlab’s Simscape Hydraulics, IcePak, CFX, Comsol,
  • Ability to convince management on courses of action with minimal assistance using both written and verbal methods
  • Effectively operate in and may facilitate cross-functional teams with guidance
  • Must be able to provide solutions that reflect understanding clinical needs, business objectives and cost implications
  • Demonstrated ability to decompose complex problems into actionable task lists
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership for engineering projects with substantial complexity and scope
  • Demonstrated ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied functions (i.e. Medical, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, etc.)
  • Ability to drive change initiatives
  • B.S. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent. A minimum 4-6 years of mechanical engineering experience. M.S. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent. A minimum 2-4 years of mechanical engineering experience. PhD. in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent. A minimum 0-2 years of engineering experience

Preferred

  • Expert in computational fluid dynamics (Ansys Fluent)
  • Expert in model based systems engineering (Siemens AMESim)
  • Non-Newtonian fluid characterization and flow visualization
  • Experience with medical device innovation methodologies (e.g. BioDesign)
  • Understanding of the requirements and design process (including risk analysis) for medical devices.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and product/process qualification; experience with Minitab or other statistics software
