Part-time Theater Technician

Job Description

The job holder provides proactive and creative technical production support for the School’s performances and activities. It includes but not limited to set up and run the sound and video equipment used to conduct live events, in-house production and school performances; and mix soundboards, play video recordings, enhance lighting, and coordinate graphics.  

 

Key Responsibilities:

(1) General

  • Assist in the safe operation and maintenance of theater sound, lighting, rigging, multimedia equipment, cameras, video monitors, and related equipment and systems used in support of stage productions, meetings, and related events.
  • Complete electrical wiring, programming, and basic construction.
  • Act as duty technician for school performances. Assist during production weeks to ensure rehearsals and production meetings run smoothly.
  • Train the students in the safe operation of theater equipment during rehearsals and performances. Assist students with sound recording, filming, editing, video footage and production of performances.
  • Liaise with relevant departments and individuals to ensure support is anticipated and provided.
  • Provide outstanding customer service with audiences and develop working relationships with faculty, staff and students.

(2) Quality Control & Housekeeping

  • Ensure all connected systems operate properly and effectively in order to guarantee the audiences a high-quality experience. Monitor the condition of equipment, including lighting, sound, rigging equipment, special effect equipment, and related electronics.
  • Provide first-line maintenance support for all relevant technical equipment, machines, furniture, fixtures and fittings. Troubleshoot malfunctions even under pressure.
  • Ensure all equipment is stored safely and is accessible to others when absent.
  • Maintain an inventory of all equipment and materials held and used.
  • Liaise with IT Office over software requirements and system supports.
  • Maintain the School’s AV archive material and make available to school as required.

 

Qualification & Experience:

  • High school diploma or above with strong interest in Theater and Entertainment Arts, Arts Management, Electronic, Electrical, Audio Engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of successful experience in theatrical production/theater management/stage and production management is preferred.

 

Skill & Personality:

  • Familiar with all aspects of theatrical production and arts management – scenery, props, paint, electrics, sound, costumes, budgets, rigging, etc.
  • Hands-on technique and knowledge of operating audio and visual equipment and its use as it relates to both live, recorded and playback techniques, its maintenance and refurbishment.
  • Hands-on technique and knowledge of lighting systems, lighting control apparatus, lighting equipment and its maintenance, refurbishment and use.
  • Knowledge of electrical principles and electrical safety.
  • Able to ensure best sound mixing, reinforcement and recording results.
  • Excellent knowledge of PC software applications in sound system.
  • Able to work with a positive attitude in high pressure/high stress situations.
  • An enthusiasm for working with and advising students in technical theater and production.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate clearly and consistently with all theater users, especially non-technical users.
  • Confident in working independently but also willing to collaborate across many departments.
  • Highly organized with successful experience in meeting deadlines and managing conflicting priorities.
  • Be fully cognizant of the need to work outside normal school hours (after-school and weekends) as required.

 

Work Arrangement:

  • 20-25 hours per week.
