The role
As the BBU Medical Head in Denmark, you will be overall accountable for the medical affairs team, strategic direction, medical deliveries, business and resource planning for therapeutic areas (TA) within the BioPharmaceutical Business Unit (BBU) in Denmark. You provide strong leadership in managing the medical affairs team and to the overall DK leadership team on key overall leadership themes and initiatives for the full DK organisation.
The Medical Head in Denmark ensures:
- Scientific expertise in all relevant country business processes (medical planning, payor input)
- part of country leadership ensuring Great Place to Work and overall organizational strategic initiatives
- organizational and operational effectiveness by performance management and strategic resource allocation within medical in line with business needs
- we do the right thing by securing the medical function operate in line with all applicable standard operation procedures, rules and regulations as well as our values
- we continuously develop the Medical Affairs organization and its team members.
The Medical Head reports to the Country Director Denmark & Norway and have a dotted line to VP Medical-Regulatory Nordics. You will be part of Nordic Medical & Regulatory Leadership Team and assist in the delivery across Nordic countries from this function. Cooperation and alignment across Nordic countries is a key accountability.
Further, you will be responsible of developing the medical affairs team in line with AstraZeneca’s strategy for talent management, succession planning, team and individual development. The Medical Head are accountable to ensure the team provides scientific expertise within the TA to other functions in AZ. You also ensures that the team’s and individuals’ level of competence being right as well as their compliance to current legal requirements and internal standards.
The Medical Head and its team members cannot have commercial objectives however may communicate strategic objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to commercial stakeholders to ensure alignment.
What you will do
- Accountable for therapeutic area insights and ensure high scientific knowledge in the team. May be the only senior scientific expert for one TA or disease area.
- Responsible for supervising the delivery of the medical affairs activity plans including performance management and operational excellence.
- Responsible for establishing strong working interfaces between Nordic medical teams and if Nordic lead role with other key AZ functions including Medical BBU teams, EUCAN Medical teams.
- Collaborate with key partners within country to ensure alignment between medical, market access and commercial planning and execution.
- Create and manage budget and strategic allocation of medical resources according to the overall strategy.
- Responsible for driving & establish a network of external medical experts and other relevant stakeholders within the TA to supplement internal medical resources.
- Drive high level of ethics, quality and integrity complying with all relevant standards, regulations and legislation.
- Accountable to ensure that tasks are of correct quality and in accordance with written procedures and current legal requirements and internal standards.
In order to succeed, you have
We are looking for you who holds a master’s degree in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or natural sciences. Thorough knowledge and experience within the pharmaceutical industry including the Medical Affairs function, health care systems and payer structures in the country of responsibility will be essential to succeed in this role.
Today you could be in a role as a scientific lead/head within one TA or disease area or have a Nordic leadership role for an assigned task or Therapy Area. It will be an advantage to have previous medical leadership experience, AZ TA experience or strong medical affairs experience.
We are in particular looking for talent with a can do mind set who with a strong background is able to develop into more senior roles within AZ over a foreseeable future. Another key focus will be to ensure the candidate provides additional diversity to the existing DK leadership team to improve the overall team dynamic and impact.
Essential requirements
- Thorough knowledge within the therapeutic area
- Managerial experience
- Excellent knowledge in English language and at least in one of the Nordic languages
- Possess business-oriented thinking, and can apply this without compromising the scientific elements of the work
- Proven ability to understand, assimilate and communicate scientific information
- Ability to build strong professional relationships internally and externally
- Structured and organized
- High ethical standard and general understanding of rules and regulations
