Scope of Position:

In this role, you will provide technical expertise in the design, construction, and process debug of assembly automation and related manufacturing equipment, supporting manufacturing at the Durham manufacturing facility.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provides input for the design, development, implementation and analysis of technical systems.
  • Performs equipment engineering design evaluations.
  • Identifies and implements alterations to current equipment to improve quality of products and/or procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance in installation and maintenance of company equipment. Analyze equipment malfunctions and accordingly develop corrective actions.
  • Estimates manufacturing cost and makes recommendations for tooling and process requirements of new or existing product lines.
  • As required, maintains records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing equipment.
  • Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors.
  • Provide mechanical drawings in SolidWorks for components being fabricated in Machine Shop.
  • Work with Manufacturing and Product Development groups on evaluating and implementing capacity, cost reduction and new opportunities.
  • Installation and training of new assembly equipment into manufacturing.
  • Involvement with process studies including process monitoring, recording data, calculate, analyze and give recommendations of data/test results.
  • Communicates project status through written or oral communicates as necessary.
  • Work with vendors on automation designs to meet equipment specifications.
  • Support maintenance / production as required in the acquisition of replacement parts for assembly equipment.
  • Implement corrective action related to process variations, equipment malfunctions, or operations endangering the safety of personnel or facility.
  • Work with project teams.

 

Travel requirements:

  • Normally < 10%, can be up to 25% to visit machine vendors depending on project assignments.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Typically, Monday – Friday; standard business hours.
  • Will need the ability to respond to off shift calls at 24/7 manufacturing plant and flex schedule is necessary.

 

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar

 

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • Minimum 3+ years’ mechanical design experience in a manufacturing (or similar) environment.

 

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for mechanical drawings.
  • Strong user in Microsoft office.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills for developing functional specifications, machine specifications, maintenance procedures, validation and qualification protocols.
  • Mechanical design – able to use engineering methods and machine knowledge to create, modify, re-design machine assembly drawings and part details.
