Job Description

KEY FOCUS

The Mechanical Excellence Engineer provides engineering services to both the Production and Services Departments to continuously improve and optimize the use of mechanical systems and equipment, as well as the work practices used in maintaining that equipment in the engineer’s responsible production area.  All efforts in this arena should be focused on improving long-term reliability and preserving the safety of those operating and maintaining the equipment.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Mechanical Excellence Engineer is accountable for maintaining the mechanical integrity of mechanical systems and equipment while generating and implementing modifications that will result in a reduction of equipment repair costs, improvement in the service factor/OEE, and avoidance of substantial unit downtime in the engineer’s responsible area.  This requires extensive knowledge/expertise in the design and operation of the equipment and requires the ability to interface with co-workers at all levels to gather information and sell ideas.  In so doing, the individual expense and capital project goals (savings, deadlines, quality, etc.) must be met.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Mechanical Excellence Engineer is responsible for identifying and rectifying any deficiencies in existing mechanical systems and equipment through the use of Root Cause Failure Analysis techniques.  This requires working with unit operations and maintenance where equipment costs, service factor/OEE impact, and scheduling impacts are reviewed to identify points of improvement.

The Mechanical Excellence Engineer is required to attend and participate in morning safety tailgates for the area of their responsibility, as well as daily production or break-in meetings.  They should also attend daily maintenance planning/scheduling meetings and assist in planning/scheduling efforts.  Attendance of these meetings should provide opportunity to be informed of any failures and opportunities for OEE or cost improvements.

The Mechanical Excellence Engineer should have an understanding of where their efforts should be focused in order to provide the greatest return.  For the most part, the engineer should be establishing and prioritizing his or her own work list.  They must know what is important to the unit operations, as well as area maintenance, and where each job fits in regards to the unit’s profitability.  Essentially, the Mechanical Excellence Engineer should be a team member of the area of their responsibility.  Pareto analysis of service factor/OEE and maintenance cost should be utilized in the engineers’ prioritization efforts.
