Location/Division Specific Information
 
The Design Engineer within the Material Characterization research and development (R&D) group at Thermo Fisher Scientific will participate in the design development, has ownership of mechanical components, system design, functionality and managing their life cycle
 
How will you make an impact?
 
The Design Engineer will be responsible for carrying out the duties of the Engineering department, including design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, estimating and process improvement. The successful candidate will report directly to the Team Leader and collaborate with design, purchasing, service and workshop/assembly teams on new and customized design projects. What will you do?
 
  • Developing constructive solutions for products according to specifications especially in scope of customer nonstandard requests.
  • Edit links constructively by modifying existing functions and elements.
  • Create schedules and, if necessary, present selected alternatives in detail.
  • Conduct constructive studies on function, arrangement and design, select / modify elements.
  • Calculation of strength, service life, wear, dimensions and weight of the parts to be constructed.
  • Performing safety risk analyses
  • Use specialized software to create models and drawings of products
  • Research new materials and methods of development
  • Reasonable understanding of electronic components, motors and drives to aid work with the electrical design engineers.
  • Organize and maintain existing engineering records
  • Construct prototypes and confirm designs with design/purchasing team
  • Perform physical testing on engineering prototypes
  • Ensure components and assemblies follow applicable industry and business standards
How will you get here?
Education
 
Completed technical studies in the field of mechanical engineering, Dipl. Ing. (FH, BA, TH) or equivalent or technical training with additional qualifications as a state-certified technician and corresponding proven professional experience

Experience
  • At least 3 years of design experience in the field of mechanical design engineering
  • Ideally, practical experience in one of the following areas: extrusion and compounding technology, pharmaceutical regulations and manufacturing
  • Extensive knowledge of metal fabrication processes
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • 3D CAD trained with solid SolidWorks knowledge of advantage
  • Safe handling of MS Office tools
  • Good command of spoken and written English or German
