Job Purpose
The Library Assistant provides assistance with story time, student research, and support for teachers and parents. Also, this role is responsible for doing the clerical, technical, and computer tasks required to allow the school library to function effectively.
Responsibilities
1. Responsibility for promoting and developing reading, literacy and information skills to students by:
- Managing the Library services to ensure the provision of an effective resource and information service to the students, teaching staff and other members of the wider school community
- Effective liaison with staff, students and parents
- Monitoring,operating and raising the awareness of students and teaching staff of resources on the internet, intranet, VLE, and online information within the Library service
- Delivering education in Library and information literacy skills to students of different ages and staffAssisting with literacy initiatives such as Book Week
2. Responsibility for ensuring that optimum access to resources is available during opening hours, including:
- Maintaining, cataloguing and promoting books and other printed resources, audio visual and electronic information material in accordance with the Library stock policy with the Director of ICT, managing the use of computers and other electronic devices relating to learning, paying particular attention to e-safety
3. Handle processing, maintaining and repairing Library stock
4. Administrate the day to day service of the Library and Learning Lounge to the students, staff and parents including book shelving
5. Setting up and maintaining the Library databases and website
6. Liaise with ICT department to enhance the ICT platform
7. Complete inventory of Library collection once a year
8. Maintain organization and tidiness of the Library
9. Assist in assessing and communicating Library needs in all areas including budgeting, staffing, infrastructure and technology
Requirements
- A relevant honours degree and appropriate qualifications in librarianship and/or extensive experience in managing Library services, ideally in the education sector
- Excellent communication skills to develop a culture of mutual respect with students and the ability to relate effectively to staff and parents
- Determination to promote and support effective independent learning
- Strong administrative, organizational, and IT skills
- Work independently and with passion
