Mars started its Yorkshire Petfood journey when it acquired the Thomas’s factory in Halifax on 1968.  Production was later transferred to our purpose built Birstall site in 1987 long before the retail park even existed.  Many products made in the original factory are still produced (Schmackos, Markies and Aquarian) and are still in growth.

 

Due to the exponential growth of the Petcare category over the past 15 months (1.2m new dogs and 300k new cats in the UK) we now have several exciting opportunities for individuals seeking employment to join the Mars Petcare team on varied shifts at our Birstall Factory as Key Production Operators.

 

The role of a Key Production Operator is to operate, control and monitor machinery within a specified area; to optimise efficiency, product quality and safety and maintain a professional, clean manufacturing environment.

 

Without the hard work of our production team our product would never be able to reach the market, so the role of production operator is one of the key roles to the business!

 

What are we looking for?

• Educated to GCSE level
• Experience of an FMCG environment would be desirable.
• FLT licence would be a nice to have but not crucial.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Basic Mechanical knowledge would be desirable.
• Understanding of SAP would be desirable.

 

What would be your key responsibilities?

 

Safety

•           To ensure their personal safety and the safety of those working around them

•           To use the KSB and Near miss system to highlight good working practices, or escalate issues.

 

Quality

•           To complete established quality checks and ensuring the production of items to defined specifications in the standard manufacturing procedure.

•           To escalate any food safety breach (CCP failure) or quality issue where needed (to colleagues, Line Leader, Team Leader or Shift Manager) and to ensure that any product below our standards is secured and the issues are resolved

•           To ensure that their line meets all hygiene and 5s standards during the shift, at handover and on shutdowns

 

Efficiency

•           To ensure the efficient operation of plant and machinery on their line in accordance with standard operating procedures.

•           To drive to achieve production targets  on a shift by shift basis (Key Performance Indicators) and to record all deviations from target and escalating any issues.

•           To ensure that performance issues in the area are identified and resolved through the Mars escalation and meeting structures.

•           To identify and resolve basic faults in processes or machines in their area

•           To carry out mechanical breakdown repairs and planned maintenance tasks once trained, ensuring all parts used are accounted for and jobs recorded in SAP PM

•           To order and manage supplies of materials required for production

 

Team

•           To supervise small teams of contractors as required in their area

•           To contribute to team engagement and take responsibility for personal engagement
