Summary:

The Intellectual Property Manager will have the overall responsibility for supporting the development of intellectual property strategies while serving as the primary liaison with patent counsel and internal research and development.  The IP Manager, working closely with R&D, will be responsible for landscaping research areas of interest and proactively ensuring Abbott intellectual property is being protected and included in strategic initiatives.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participates in new technology evaluations.
  • Coordinates landscapes (patent, literature, and funding) searches and reviews with inventors.
  • Identifies, reviews, and recommends IP filing strategies.
  • Develops intellectual property strategies and manages patent portfolios
  • Assists in the IP disclosure process; facilitates invention disclosure meetings; collects and records new ideas.
  • Monitors and documents the status of relevant issued patents, trademarks, and pending applications.
  • Promotes the mission and business of the department through the development of strong relationships with inventors, legal counsel, prospective and actual licensees, and colleagues.
  • Identifies impactful business-relevant technology.

Accountability/Scope:

Accountability:  The Intellectual Property Manager is accountable for protecting and maximizing the value of Abbott’s intellectual property worldwide.

Scope of Responsibility: The Intellectual Property Manager will work with technical leaders, inventors and the patent legal group to support patent applications that support new business opportunities or general improvements.  

Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD degree preferably in a life sciences / technical field is required.  Knowledge of diagnostics is preferred but not required.  A registered Patent Agent or a J.D. degree is considered a plus.  Experience with intellectual property matters and analyzing commercialization potential of inventions is required.
