We are currently looking to employ a Historian technical lead to work in projects, supporting our site in Södertälje, just outside Stockholm, Sweden. The AstraZeneca Södertälje site is one of the world's largest manufacturing units for pharmaceuticals. Here, we thrive in a high-tech and LEAN-based environment where we value collaboration and smart solutions highly. Our two sites are beautifully situated close to the city centre, water, and forest.

You will be the technical lead of the Site Historian for the site – the Production Information System (PIS), which is a large site historian based on the AspenTech A1 platform. Site Historians are used across AstraZeneca to capture data from equipment and systems at manufacturing sites and holds information about the manufacturing process. These are key in AstraZeneca’s work to digitize our manufacturing processes. Harvesting the gold dust by analysing the data from our process equipment, site Historian captures process data, brings it to visualisation and dashboards. Site Historian is key in AstraZeneca’s work to digitize our manufacturing processes.

Why does AstraZeneca capture this data at the shop floor? The information collected by our site Historian is used to:

  • Generate Batch Reports for batch release, hence essential part of our delivery of medicines to our patients
  • Optimize the manufacturing process – how can we be more efficient in our processes?
  • Recipe Management
  • The information in our Historians is used by other applications, and going forward this important information will be increasingly used locally and globally within AZ for many purposes, and a fundament in our Factory of the Future

As a technical lead will be to work with projects to ensure successful integrations of various equipment’s and systems to our site Historian. In order to do this, you will work closely with amongst others the project teams at Sweden Operations, system integration partners, the PIS management & support team, the AZ Historian developers as well as the global Historian teams.

Key Accountabilities

As the site Historian technical lead, you will act as the overall technical expert on the site Historian platform and guide the business into, and through the governance and technical model of the platform. You will be a key member in a global team based in both Södertälje and Chennai, India. Working across time zones and different nationalities. Strong focus on collaboration with customers are required. The right individual will have great possibilities for further development within AstraZeneca IT function.

To be successful in this role you should have very good communication and collaboration skills. Problem solving is a daily task. As a person you’re curious and not afraid of picking up new techniques and skills. You will be expected to take ownership of actions and tasks, and report and deliver on these to your project team and to the business.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities in this role include:

  • Stakeholder management, primarily project related, including users, infrastructure/middleware teams, 3rd party software vendors for resolving issues and potential process improvements
  • Leading the development team in day to day activities, technical review, resource planning and follow up on progress to plan on projects
  • Ensuring we follow the AstraZeneca standards for the Historian platform
  • Ensuring the project requirements are met in the design
  • Taking ownership of issues and see them through to resolution
  • Ensuring a robust knowledge transfer to the support team is done as part of the project
  • Establishing and improving ways of working, processes and standards. Identifying areas for improvement or solutions to permanently address the issue and make it a standard
  • Working with the support team to investigate and resolve issues
  • Ensuring that new team members are introduced, trained and act as a mentor in the team
  • Ensuring that, in all aspects of the role, compliance is maintained with the guidelines that regulate the AZ business, e.g. GMP.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Degree in Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent experience

OR

  • Degree in Manufacturing/Process Automation or equivalent experience
  • Fluent in Swedish and English
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, articulate problems
  • Problem-solving and collaborative mindset

Preferred Skills & Knowledge

  • Leader skills/team leader experience
  • Basic understanding and Interest of manufacturing automation, e.g. PLC, SCADA, DCS
  • Experience of MES/Historian i.e. AspenTech AspenOne, OSI PI or equivalent
  • Basic understanding of Oracle and SQL
  • Understanding of Microsoft Reporting Services
  • Understanding of scripting languages (SQL+ and similar)
  • Good knowledge of regulatory requirements including GMP and 21 CFR Part 11.
  • Considerable prior experience in application development/support of off - the-shelf and custom applications
  • Familiarity of working in an international, multi-time zone environment
