Job Description

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Hemophilia Research Intern will perform experiments with her/his mentor to establish optimal experimental conditions for our ex vivo thrombus formation system. Once established the model will be characterized for (robustness, variability, etc.). If time permits, novel compounds addressing severe hemophilia will be evaluated in this model.

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Hemophilia Research Intern, are to: 

 

  • Shadow Hem DIU (and other) group scientists;
  • Maintain laboratory safety practices and upkeep of instrumentation;
  • Learn how to operate microscopy/microfluidic platform;
  • Learn and execute record keeping practices for reagents, samples, and data files;
  • Learn, then plan an experimental protocol a specific assay development/pharmacology study;
  • Perform routine bench techniques including pipetting, dilution, buffer preparation etc.;
  • Analyze the experimental results via instrument software, image analysis software, prism and Excel files;
  • Summarize and write up results notebook documentation;
  • Work with blood products
  • Achieve Learning Outcomes Expected of the Intern:
    • Learn experimental design
    • Learn microscopy and image analysis methods
    • Establish optimal experimental conditions for the model.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Chemistry;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively within a departmental team and with members of the same or higher organizational levels;
  • Good organization, documentation, prioritization and scheduling skills together with an overall desire to learn;
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task;
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office with beginner level proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Demonstrate potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and collaboration with others and independent thought;
  • Ability and willingness to work in San Francisco, CA for the summer (approximately 12 weeks);
  • Willingness to work with blood products.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Previous research or lab experience.
