Genotyping Innovations Intern
BayerUpdate time: October 23,2020
Job Description

In Bayer’s Crop Science division, we shape agriculture through breakthrough innovation that helps to nourish our growing world, preserve natural resources and deliver better solutions for all farmers. Using the creative spark that comes from human ingenuity, we seek to deliver world-class innovation, set new standards in sustainability, and drive our digital transformation. Our products include high-performance seeds & traits, crop protection solutions, and digital farming tools.

Genetic testing is foundational to how Bayer works to improve crops and develop crop protection solutions. Our team identifies and develops novel genetic detection methods. Because of the scope and scale of the effort within Bayer Crop Sciences, we also apply automation and bioinformatics to deploy genetic testing technologies, including sequencing, at large scales.

We are seeking a creative individual that is eager to try new approaches and connect with experts within the company to identify and develop genetic testing solutions.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Genotyping Innovations Intern, are to:

  • Drive experimental design with guidance from the Genotyping Discovery Lead;
  • Document plans, experiments and results;
  • Participate in team meetings with the genotype discovery team;
    • Provide reports and present data;
    • Ask questions and make suggestions to the team;
    • Engage in team-building and professional skills building activities;
  • Network within the company to learn what Bayer does and how Bayer scientists contribute;
  • Give a presentation to a large group of scientists and leaders summarizing the work done during the internship period;
  • Provide an assessment of further genotyping and sequencing technologies to pursue.

WHO YOU ARE

The successful candidate will have a solid foundation in molecular biology methods. They may have other skills, experiences or interests that prepare them for a specific project.

Because the exact project will be selected together with the selected candidate, various skills and experiences could be applicable. If you've got ideas about how to apply your previous experiences and what you've learned in school to genetic testing, you could be an ideal candidate!

For example:

  • If you are familiar with 3D printing methods and want to learn SolidWorks, your project could involve designing disposable genetic testing devices that a farmer could carry in their pocket to test a plant for a disease;
  • If you love molecular biology, you could demonstrate new methods to prepare DNA for sequencing;
  • You could apply your programming experience to develop and deploy a new marker set that extends genomics approaches to a new crop.

Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE values.  More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in biology, engineering, computational biology, molecular biology, OR STEM;
  • Familiarity with Molecular biology methods and protocols, including sequencing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous laboratory experience, especially involving molecular biology methods;
  • Programming (e.g., R or python) and/or Bioinformatics;
  • 3D printing or prototype development.
