What you will do

Amgen plans to build a new state of the art biologics drug substance facility and a new Amgen site in Holly Spring North Carolina. When completed, the Flexbatch facility will feature the best in-class drug substance manufacturing technology using Amgen’s proven Manufacturing of the Future platform to deliver a highly reconfigurable and flexible manufacturing platform and facility. The site will feature integrated sustainability innovations to reduce carbon and waste, as part of Amgen’s plan to be a carbon-neutral company by 2027.

The Engineering Technical Authority (ETA) within Amgen Corporate Engineering leads the design effort for critical projects as well as provides technical expertise and direction across Amgen’s global operations network. The Principal Engineer is part of the ETA organization that includes Process Systems, Facilities and Utilities, Site Project Engineering, Maintenance and Metrology functions. S/he which will be part of this major capital projects design and delivery leadership team collaborating with the Engineering Technical Lead for the project.

In this vital role you will be responsible for delivering the design and leading technical aspects for facility and utilities elements of a major strategic capital project for a new greenfield site Amgen is constructing for Biologics Drug Substance Manufacturing site in North Carolina.

The initial project scope includes the design and construction of the new greenfield drug substance (DS) site which integrates aspects of Amgen’s Next Generation Manufacturing platform with traditional manufacturing systems to provide a flexible and cost-effective facility. It also includes a warehouse, central utilities, laboratory, and administration facilities along with other site infrastructure. As part of this project, Amgen will have a strong focus on delivering a digitally enabled and sustainable facility aligned with our digital manufacturing strategy and our aggressive corporate sustainability goals.

Responsibilities:

  • provide leadership and review of all utility systems and facility design provided by the A&E firm that is contracted to deliver the detailed design as part of Amgen integrated project delivery approach.
  • provide engineering coordination of internal Amgen domain specialists and field engineering leads as well as oversight of external consultant subject area SMEs (A&E firm) and contractors.
  • provides coordination and oversite to a team of internal Amgen engineers and MEP subject area leads who are part of the project team.
  • Experience leading teams, projects, and programs in a multi-tiered organization and directing the allocation of resources
  • travel as needed to deliver the project.

Upon startup, it is anticipated that s/he would either transition to a technical/engineering role within the new site or would move into a corporate engineering role with network wide responsibilities for either a specific technical area or providing technical leadership to a portfolio of projects.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Engineering / Engineering Technology experience

OR

Master’s degree and 6 years of Engineering / Engineering Technology experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of Engineering / Engineering Technology experience

OR

Associates degree and 10 years of Engineering / Engineering Technology experience

OR

High School Diploma/GED and 12 years of Engineering / Engineering Technology experience

  • background in sustainability and experience in implementation of automated solutions such as AGVs for inventory management and material movement.

  • large capital projects delivery with responsibility for the utility and facility design as part of the design team.

  • propensity to provide direction and guidance to external design firms to delivery capital projects.

  • skill in providing technical support to manufacturing facilities.

  • track record of compliance in a highly regulated environment.

  • ability to effectively lead and partner in a complex, matrixed organization.

  • deployment of continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, Reliability Centered Maintenance, Root Cause Analysis tools, etc.).

  • design, development and deployment of automated inventory management systems such as ASRS and AVG systems.

  • selection of and implementation of design elements for improved sustainability.
