Summary:

Develop and manage execution of the company’s new sustainable material sourcing and development efforts, working with HQ designers and product developers, Shanghai based sourcing coordinators, and vendors throughout China to ensure continuous progress in achieving goals. Work to understand and consult on best practices, emerging innovations, and material/fabric goals as they relate to recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, and ethical/sustainable sourcing.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Support/drive the sourcing & development process with existing vendors (trading, factories & mills), ensuring they increasingly use fabrics and trims that are considered “sustainable” vs. existing materials being used for various woven and knit products.
• Provide vendors and HQ consultation/training on alterative materials/trims/accessories to use while advising how and where best to source and develop such.
• Assist in the development of fabric through final hand off of finished product, ensuring adherence to textile standards and blending of sustainable fabrications.
• Work with HQ design team to build and maintain a mill vendor matrix of sustainable fabrics.
• Develop standard operating procedures for HQ and vendors for working with sustainable material supply chains in China. Help HQ, Shanghai office and vendors with KPI definitions, review these KPIs regularly to validate data and compile KPI summary report to management.
• Proactively visits factories, spinning and ginning mills to check that the sustainable material is being handled correctly.
• Study and take leadership role in understanding client/retailer requirements and helping develop plans/goals across the supply-chain to achieve such, as well as documentation/reporting/certification methods to ensure validity of such efforts.
• Discuss pricing with vendors throughout the development process and/or work with them towards a cost optimized “sustainable” product.
• Communicate order status, work in progress, delays and deliveries to design/development/sourcing staff you work with.
• Respond to questions, support customer interactions, and resolving customer concerns on eco and chemical compliance issues in timely and accurately manner.
• Be responsible for staying on-top of seasonal and industry trends, best practices, and emerging requirements as relative to “sustainability.”

Requirements:

• Diploma or above in textile related science.
• 3-5 years of experience in fabric development and sourcing or working with sustainable materials for textiles and accessories.
• Demonstrated knowledge and strong understanding of chemistries of dyes and chemicals, textile wet processing, dyeing, printing and production with special emphasis on brand & retailers, apparel, leather and home textile industry.
• Good understanding of all areas of textile processing, machinery aspects and brands/retailers chemical requirements.
• Proven record of having worked with recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable materials/trims/accessories as well as ethically sourcing such.
• Strong English communication skills (written & verbal), as well as cross-cultural, project management and organization skills.
• High motivation, team player, and proactive.
• Willingness to travel throughout Jiangsu/Zhejiang as needed to visit vendors.
