The Injection Molding and Plastics Engineering group is seeking a talented engineer in a dynamic environment to join our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team. This ‘hands on” position provides you the opportunity for aiding in the part development process, creating a molding strategy from prototype through production phases, mold design development and approval, process development, as well as assisting to sustain molds and equipment through the product lifecycle. Your ability to plan, direct, and coordinate manufacturing equipment and processes to produce high quality injection molded products will have a direct impact to the company. The scale of the projects assigned will be commensurate with the position. The Plastics Engineer is part of a larger team of professional engineers coordinating the molding efforts of new program launches, creating and/or revising manufacturing processes and assisting the manufacturing operations in problem solving while driving for continuous improvement. We are seeking a detail-orientated person with relevant technical experience who can exhibit the communication skills required to effectively represent our organization.
Manufacturing Assessment:
- Work closely with R&D employees to optimize plastic part design for manufacturability, cost reduction, and product performance.
- Provide cost analysis as appropriate.
- Provide recommendations for critical part dimensions and tolerancing.
Mold Development:
- Responsible to provide the manufacturing team options for prototype, pilot, and production molding solutions.
- Develop and recommend preferred molding strategies.
- Ability to coordinate with manufacturing plants to obtain information and analyze processes from existing molds and related processes.
- Develop RFQ requirements for mold procurement.
- Collaborate with Global Purchasing & Supply Management to obtain supplier quotations as appropriate.
- Lead and interact with mold building supplier companies for a successful design and build of new, refurbished, or modified molds.
- Effectively work with third party suppliers of injection molded products when required.
- Lead and direct process development at FOT and/or FAT events.
Process Development:
- Develop and document new and existing processes using a scientific molding approach.
- Implement and evaluate changes to existing processes designed to improve product quality, productivity and overall equipment efficiency.
Provide technical leadership to process technicians, operators and other molding personnel at internal and external manufacturing sites. Transfer process development information to the receiving site and arrange or provide for the training and materials to properly maintain molds and related equipment. Participate in SAT and/or validation activities at the receiving plant as required. Provide technical support/solutions to manufacturing sites for driving improved yield and throughput for cost reduction activities as well as part quality initiatives. Collaborate with mold, equipment, and material vendors to resolve technical issues as required. Track project status and provide for effective communication with all interested groups. Create, request, and manage a capital budget within project limits when applicable. Facilitate and support plant site specific manufacturing safety, environmental, and ergonomics efforts.
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
- 3+ years plastics engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC)
- Proficient skills in MS Suite of products.
- Demonstrate solid knowledge in the following:
- Mold Design
- Plastic Part Design
- Plastic Processing
- Proficient understanding of 2D part drawings
Preferred/Optional:
- Certification in Scientific Molding
- Understanding and experience in plastic flow modeling, simulations and interpretations.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts including 6s.
- Proficient skills in CAD and GD & T usage.
- Prior experience with robots and EOAT usage.
- Over-molding or 2 Shot molding experience.
