GROUP/DIVISION SUMMARY
The Director of Operations & Site Leader is part of the Clinical Next Generation Sequencing Division (CSD) which supplies “sample to answer” instrument, software and reagent solutions; has the leading position in research markets; and is the market leader in targeted sequencing and clinical Next- Generation Sequencing.
 
POSITION SUMMARY
In this position, you will lead a large integrated manufacturing, research and development, support function and distribution site based in Frederick, MD. The site is a center of excellence for FDA regulated products consumed in the life science industry, including both made-to-stock (MTS) and made-to-order (MTO) products. Responsibilities include an intense focus on meeting customer needs in a demanding environment which includes a mix of research use only (RUO) and clinical/IVD products, leading and ensuring all operations functions are performing at peak efficiency with proper internal communication and interfaces, and developing the operations and manufacturing teams while ensuring delivery of high quality products which are in compliance with all applicable manufacturing regulations.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Drive site growth and expansion initiatives leading strategically and collaboratively with functional partners to ensure the site evolves as needed by the business.
  • Lead directly and through influence, exhibiting Thermo Fisher core values and competencies utilizing our leadership competency framework and criteria to ensure consistency across the company.
  • Drive site wide productivity initiatives. Identify projects and recommend appropriate course of action (e.g., discontinuation, outsource, process improvement) to maximize profitability and supply. Utilize the PPI Business System tools and resources to maximize the productivity across the site.
  • Drive a site wide culture of accountability and ownership through agile and effective communications and execution, transparency, courage, calmness, resilience, and confidence.
  • Accountable for the following
    • Develop and communicate a vision and strategic objectives that aligns with the operations and business strategy. Align with all operations and divisions to ensure a consistent message for the team.
    • Establish key performance indicators that drive change and visibility to the team and leadership. Track, trend, and monitor routinely with active data analysis to target and drive results.
    • Monitor and manage progress on projects, ensuring key requirements and milestones are met; utilizing thorough risk management practices, continuous improvement tools and prioritization to utilize resources effectively to maintain high probability of success.
    • Manage budgets, schedules and key operating metrics. Drive fiscal accountability and knowledge.
    • Ensure there is a routine resource planning process and assessment that ensures teams coordinate the hiring, training, coaching and annual performance reviews of operations leadership across the site, ensuring clear objectives and expectations are set with routine direct feedback.
    • Facilitate and mentor the development of team members and leaders.
    • Drive compliance to applicable US FDA and global Quality System Regulations partnering with Quality, Technical and Regulatory teams. Ensure Audits, recommendations and action plans are addressed and the CAPA process is followed

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of management experience in a complex manufacturing environment.
  • Strong leadership ability with the capability to leverage diverse resources, respond quickly, understand the impact of changes and decisions, facilitate agreement, build collaborative relationships and focus on customer needs.
  • Experience in leading an organization in a cGMP environment with a mix of Make to Stock (MTS) and Make to Order (MTO)/Custom products preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience as a change agent with ability to influence and communicate at all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels and within all functions to actively coach technical and non-technical professionals to achieve maximum performance.
  • Practical application experience in continuous improvement methodologies and/or lean 6-sigma to improve processes, strengthen quality and drive efficiency.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to effectively use data in problem solving and to evaluate process changes and impacts.
  • Ability to partner with and influence key stakeholders including Finance, R&D, Product Management and the Commercial Sales team.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Larger site leadership is a key differentiator (>400 employees) but not required; multi-site operations leadership is an additional advantage, especially across international lines.
  • Audit experience within a cGMP environment with successful outcomes is valuable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and verbal and the ability to facilitate effective team interactions.
