The Tianjin Juilliard School is seeking an experienced and certified ESL instructor who has a musical background, ideally some years of study of classical music, to guide English language instruction at the School which is comprised of an accredited Master of Music program and a Saturday Pre-College program. The Director of Language Studies will also serve as primary instructor of EAP classes for the Masters program and will teach some sections of Pre-College EFL as scheduling permits. Working closely with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and EAP faculty at The Juilliard School in New York, the Director of Language Studies will revise as needed the existing curriculum, teaching methodology and assessment models for EFL classes in the Pre-College and the EAP classes in the Graduate School of the Tianjin Juilliard School.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- To develop course content and methodology for teaching EFL to music students in the Pre-College and EAP to students in the Master’s Program at the Tianjin Juilliard School.
- To collaborate and coordinate with the Director of EAP at The Juilliard School in New York as well as Associate Deans in Tianjin regarding the curriculum and teaching methods and also to ensure compliance with JSNY’s accreditation requirements.
- To expand upon and utilize assessment models for English language proficiency for applicants to both programs as part of overall Admissions criteria. And to create additional assessment mechanisms for incoming students to determine class placement.
- To administrate any English assessments of applicants and incoming students that are supplemental to TOEFL and IELTS tests
- To analyze data from Pre-College students and Graduate School applicant language assessments to inform content of English language courses and to contribute to an ongoing revision of applicants’ language proficiency requirements.
- To develop the curriculum for a pre-matriculation English-language intensive summer program in July and August 2020 designed to allow the School to admit students conditionally with a requirement to improve their English language acquisition to the approved level before matriculation
- To create lesson plans and instruct sections of (number TBD) of EAP classes in the Master’s program and possibly EFL classes in the Pre-College program as well; and to supervise additional English language instructors who may be hired to ensure consistency of instruction within both the Pre-College and Master’s program.
- To consult with the Associate Dean in charge of Student Academic Support and tutoring to devise effective strategies to support English learners in the Master’s program with language-related challenges in their courses and to provide support to help them communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Also, to provide ongoing supervision of English language-related tutors and/or conversation partners.
Qualifications:
- Native English Speaker
- Graduate degree or above
- Minimum of five years of experience teaching English classes in an academic setting
- Classical Music background strongly preferred
- ESL Certification
- Extensive experience in designing curriculums and conducting student assessment
- Knowledge of international education systems, particularly the Chinese high school and university-level educational systems.
- Skilled in communicating with varied audiences of cultural diversity.
- Highly effective writing/verbal and interpersonal skills.
