Job Purpose:
- A key leader within the Infusion Systems & Application Leadership Team responsible for creating and implementing department vision that aligns with the organization's vision and strategic plan.
- Ensure the ongoing success of Baxter through driving the strategic organization and technical development roadmap within the Medication Delivery global business unit.
- Drive innovation in the product portfolio ensuring that existing products are continuously reviewed and enhanced, and that new product development is a key component of the ongoing strategy.
- Ensure that the global vision for the portfolio is clearly defined and communicated through the R&D organization.
- Responsible for meeting major objectives for the organization, which is shared with other senior management in the business.
- Supervise high-level professionals/ researchers/scientists in their assigned project activities.
- Establish business/technical objectives of research project groups and advise on problem solving efforts in own area and others'.
- Drive specific innovation initiatives consistent with business objective and/or operational efficiency activities to position organization for the future.
- Assume significant responsibility for the size, importance, cost and timelines of a critical project.
Responsibilities:
- Key influencer in defining the strategic technical roadmap and accountable for tactical execution of development programs within the responsible product portfolio (focus on infusion systems)
- Ensuring that any bought or acquired technology is integrated with the existing portfolio to ensure maximum impact for patients
- Establish the short/medium and long-term strategic road map for product portfolio Ensure that product portfolio is enhanced via ongoing maintenance of the existing product line as well as significant focus on New Product Development
- Ensure that overall budgets are maintained and managed effectively Reporting on product and portfolio viability to senior leadership in the organization
- Ensuring that innovation is at the front of all R&D activity
- Create and communicate a global vision of the business' contribution to the business goals, insuring industry leadership. Inspire team to action consistent with vision. Establish high standards and stretch goals for organization. Remove barriers to outstanding performance. Hold team accountable for successful completion of projects/tasks.
- Select, develop and retain teams that include senior level technical contributors. Define and communicate criteria by which team and individual success will be measured. Provide constructive feedback and recognition.
- Mentor others in areas such as innovation, trade secrets, patents, and publications.
- Ensure development of state-of-the-art expertise in industry and function specialties; deploy effectively.
- Provide leadership to team members, guiding them in terms of prioritization, problem resolution, process clarification, referrals to appropriate experts, etc.
- Communicate strategic imperatives to project success (e.g. timing of market entry, innovative technology and costs). Develop strategic plans that incorporate regional and global business practices and customer needs.
- Develop effective program milestones, schedules and budgets, including capital; review and apply best-demonstrated practices, team processes, and improve operational efficiency. Identify and resolve issues that may jeopardize project schedules or improve project time. Ensure timely and risk based decisions are made at appropriate levels. Seek regular input and feedback from customers and take appropriate action.
- Develop budgets for each cost center within scope of responsibility that ensure the best utilization financial resources.
- Proactively prioritize and balance utilization of resources allocated to project; identify opportunities to cross-train, back-fill. Develop recommendations for outside resources as required for the team/project; present internal vs. external analysis.
- Understand and effectively communicate to team members about the market niche, competitive forces influencing the project, and how the project fits into the function's strategic focus/plan. Ensure that team objectives align with key Corporate strategic programs. Accountable for successfully meeting agreed upon milestones for key Corporate projects.
- Generate innovative solutions to complex problems through the use of multiple disciplines and technical principles. Create innovative products/ processes/ methods through novel combinations of expertise within the organization.
- Build a professional network both internally within the business unit, across units and outside of Baxter.
- Direct teams to effectively transfer technology from design development to implementation.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant Quality System Regulations and other regulatory requirements related to research and development (product development, design and safety) to ensure compliance in all research, data collection and reporting activities.
Qualifications:
- Significant experience in Electro-mechanical devices systems/hardware/software engineering
- Previous exposure to the medical devices industry
- Significant experience leading a cross functional team
- Significant experience working in a global matrix environment
- Proven experience in driving product specific and overall portfolio strategy in a global business.
- Must possess strong knowledge of scientific/technical disciplines and solid knowledge of related disciplines such a regulatory, quality, and/or product development. Recognized internally and externally as expert in functional area.
- Knowledge of quality and general business systems.
- Must possess strong ability to negotiate for resources and influence others internally and externally.
- Must demonstrate strategic leadership, mentoring, and management capabilities
- Understanding of financial tools and capable of setting budgets.
- Bachelors with 14+ years experience or 12+ years experience with Masters, 10+ years experience with PhD
