Job Description
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for representing Thermo Fisher Scientific in European national capitals – especially Berlin, The Hague and Paris -- on life sciences issues.  The position promotes the company by developing relations with senior strategic decision makers, elected and ministry leaders and industry organizations. The ideal candidate will contribute to growing Thermo Fisher’s revenue by promoting policies that improve the availability and economics of our diagnostics and pharma services businesses.
 
This position offers a unique opportunity to join a growing government relations effort that has been transformed by the company’s involvement in every aspect of COVID-19 response around the world.
 
This person will represent the company’s diagnostics and pharma services positions in national capitals on the European continent.  While the focus is expected to be Germany, Netherlands & France, the work may also periodically include Austria, Switzerland and elsewhere. The issues include diagnostics and medical device payment and policy; personalized medicine; pharmaceutical manufacturing and supply chains and similar issues. 
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
  • In collaboration with the Europe government relations and country commercial leaders, develop country-specific government relations strategies for Germany, Netherlands and France. This effort will build on significant developments in our interactions with leaders of these countries prior to and during the pandemic.
  • Prioritize the opportunities in national capitals, determine company positions and execute the strategy in alignment with the company’s regional leadership team;
  • Establish strong relationships with appropriate public policy makers and opinion leaders to support business objectives; develop and maintain relationships with trade associations, industry experts and research institutions related to Thermo Fisher’s business;
  • Ensure effective representation of Thermo Fisher with national industry associations and assess whether Thermo Fisher’s interests are optimally covered by these platforms;
  • Work closely with the Europe, Middle East & Africa regional leadership and communications teams to monitor and analyze government developments and initiatives likely to impact Thermo Fisher’s relevant operations; Ensure Thermo Fisher’s inclusion in impactful public discussions;
  • Provide advice to Senior Director, HR Germany, on discussions with works councils.
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Personal attachment to Thermo Fisher’s mission of enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer;
  • 8-10 years of increasing experience in a government and/or government relations positions;
  • Established network of government, association and business contacts in Berlin;
  • Strong familiarity with the German Federal and State structure and decision-making process;
  • Proven ability to develop advocacy plans that meet business goals and to achieve public policy success;
  • An understanding of life sciences, diagnostics, trade, pharma policy issues;
  • Self-directed and self-motivated to action; ability to work effectively in a diverse, inclusive and geographically-dispersed organization;
  • Reputation for uncompromising integrity;
  • Aptitude for clear, concise written and verbal communications;
  • Ability to work confidently with senior company executives and government officials, pursuing near-term activities with long-term objectives in mind;
  • Fluency in German & English is required; capability in an additional European language is preferred;
  • 30% European travel may be necessary, after the pandemic; infrequent transatlantic travel (likely not more than twice per year)
