What you will do

In this vital role you will lead a highly skilled team in the delivery of Amgen’s capital project portfolio in eastern North America to provide Amgen with the facilities and capabilities it needs to serve our future patients around the globe.  This includes management of a diverse portfolio of capital projects spanning GMP production facilities, Development laboratories, and office and collaboration areas.  

 

The Director is a member of the Global Capital projects leadership team that looks to continually innovate as an industry leader in the delivery of capital projects while learning from our external partners and peers around the world.     

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Manages the capital project portfolio across Amgen’s facilities in eastern North America including 

  • Amgen’s largest GMP Drug Substance site in Rhode Island, Process Development Innovation Hub in Cambridge MA, North America Distribution Center in Kentucky, Shared Services center in Tampa, and other office locations in the eastern US and Canada.   

  • Portfolios which include complex projects supporting the engineering, construction and start up activities for various facilities ranging from administration to laboratories (Biology, Process Development, Quality, Chemistry) cGMP manufacturing, utility plants, warehouse and distribution centers.  

  • Defining project scope, forming project teams, ensuring safe execution, developing project strategy, master schedules and spending schedules.  

  • Providing day to day management and leadership including mentoring, staff development and work prioritization for a team of direct and indirect reports. provide input into department objectives and establishment of strategic direction within the Global Capital Project Management team.

Ensuring the health of the portfolio in the following areas: 

  • Safe execution (being purposefully present on job site and leading by example). 

  • Project objectives, and accurate interpretation Policies for major projects, interprets, executes, and recommends modifications to company-wide policies. 

  • Project funding processes (governance approvals of scope, cash flow, schedule, and deliverables). 

  • Motivate project teams. 

  • Contractor evaluation and selection process. 

  • Logistics system, including RFQ’s, bid selection materials management, invoice approval. 

  • Inclusion and belonging for integrated team. 

  • Governance, including progress vs. schedule vs. cost with appropriate teams and provide regular updates to client and management.

What we expect of you 

Basic Qualifications: 

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Engineering and / or Capital projects delivery experience 

OR 

Master’s degree and 8 years of Engineering and / or Capital projects delivery experience  

OR 

Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of Engineering and / or Capital projects delivery experience 

AND 

4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

  • Previous leadership experience with a diverse team of technical engineering and facilities management in the Pharmaceutical / Biotechnology industries. 

  • Lean Construction or other continuous improvement methodology experience, applied to capital projects. 

  • Understanding of Lifecycle Cost Analysis and Total Cost of Ownership. 

  • Extensive experience in the application of project management skills and concepts with a critical understanding of related engineering disciplines. 

  • Demonstrate practical ingenuity to problem solve using practical solutions. 

  • Collaborative skills to partner with technical, scientific and management internal user groups. 

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and conflicting priorities across a broad range of facilities and engineering fields. 

  • Excellent people skills featuring a proven management style that fits within the Amgen culture and values. 

  • Interpersonal and facilitation skills vital to forge consensus among competing clients' interests on critical and time-sensitive issues—important in ensuring that, within Amgen's collaborative culture, projects are finished on time and on budget. 

  • Uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of processes or procedures. 

  • Strong analytical skills in both information and communication technologies. 

  • Ability to tactfully negotiate and positively influence peers and executive leadership. 

  • Effective verbal, visual and written communication skills with effective listening.
