KEY OBJECTIVE
The Database as a Service team is an integral part of Oracle Cloud Native Engineering (CNE). CNE provides a Micro-Services Platform (MSP), Operations Stack (OST), and Software Delivery as a Service (SDaaS) pipeline to support high margin, highly elastic, and highly available Software as a Service (SaaS) applications into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
Cloud Native Engineering (CNE) provides critical cloud services for multiple Oracle Global Business Unit applications. Oracle’s second generation Infrastructure as a Service, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), provides improved performance and reliability. Oracle GBUs already have over a thousand customers awaiting migration onto OCI in addition to new customer wins. Applications from Retail, Hospitality, Food & Beverage, Communications, Health Sciences, Financial Services, Construction & Engineering, and Utilities business sectors, require 24x7 support.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of the software engineering division, you will take an active role in the definition and evolution of standard practices and procedures. You will be responsible for defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, designing and debugging of software applications or operating systems.
Work is non-routine and very complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization.
CNE’s primary support model is follow the sun, utilizing geographically diverse team members during normal working hours to provide support. CNE will strive to have subject matter experts distributed globally. In most cases this works well, but there are times where domain expertise is concentrated. With geographic diversity, countries and regions will have a broader array of holidays requiring a flexible support schedule. Additionally, most engineers globally have weekends off during normal working schedules and customer support is required during these periods.
To provide the required support to Oracle customers, CNE will use additional compensation to cover extended business hours or on-call pay based on in-country laws and Oracle policy. In general, there will be a Primary and Secondary engineer designated in advance to provide coverage for select services. If numerous services are supported in a specific geographic region there may be more than one set of Primary / Secondary engineers selected. Software engineers and database administrators will engage in activities to restore services that are down or degraded. This may be as simple as running an existing script to restart a service, executing a standard operating procedure, or may require codes changes with review steps, integration, testing, and software deployments to restore a service to normal operation. In addition engagement with other Oracle development and support teams may be needed.
Responsibilities include\:
- Alert and diagnostic monitoring
- Work closely with Product Development teams and provide feedback to improve product quality
- Develop administration automation and monitoring scripts as needed
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures/documentation
- Provide escalation support for database related issues
- Share knowledge and mentor junior team members as needed
- Attend weekly team meetings and participate team building activities
- Other duties, as assigned
- Participate 24x7 on call support on a weekly rotating schedule, including weekends
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE and TRAINING
- Must be a motivated, team-player with the ability to work cross functionally with a “can-do” and “do-it-right” attitude, a self-starter, and constantly thinking of ways to improve the work.
- Comfortable leading a team technically, providing direction and mentorship; or acting as an individual contributor.
- Experience with Oracle database 12c, 18c, RAC, ASM, Data Guard and Performance tuning
- Experience with Enterprise Manager for monitoring and administering mission critical databases.
- Experience with database backup and recovery.
- Experience with database patching and upgrades.
- Experience in any Unix shell script, Perl script and Python.
- Experience in Oracle SQL/PLSQL.
- Experience administering databases on Exadata is a strong plus
- Strong troubleshooting skills to investigate errors and performance bottlenecks
- 7 years of experience supporting relational databases as a DBA, with a focus in Oracle and related tools, with strong sense of ownership, urgency and drive.
- Experience with an organization with a key 24 X 7 reliance on its databases is preferred. Willing to work in a 24x7 production mission critical environment, including weekends
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent preferred
As a member of the software engineering division, you will assist in defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, debugging or designing of software applications or operating systems. Provide technical leadership to other software developers. Specify, design and implement modest changes to existing software architecture to meet changing needs.
Duties and tasks are varied and complex needing independent judgment. Fully competent in own area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower level personnel. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 4 years of software engineering or related experience.!|!
