The UM-SJTU Joint Institute is located in Shanghai, the heart of the most internationalized and economic-active area of China, Asia and even the world nowadays. From its role as the bridge of the advanced engineering education of the U.S. and fast development and plenty of resources in China, to our proud innovative curricular enhancements and current cutting-edge research programs, the target of the institute is to become a world-wise top level research institute, especially in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Originating from the two top Mechanical Engineering programs, ranked as the top 1 in China (ME SJTU) and top 4 in the U.S. (ME University of Michigan), the UM-SJTU Joint Institute receives strong support from both partner universities and Chinese government. It offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and related fields and all JI courses are offered in English. Its ME program is the first ABET accredited mechanical engineering program in the mainland of China, and its students are among China’s best. All domestic graduate students recruited are from top universities in China. The Joint Institute models itself after the world class U.S. research universities, in terms of its tenure review and promotion system, academic environment, research program, and undergraduate/graduate curriculum.
