What you’ll do

As a data operations & governance Associate Principal Scientist you will be responsible for driving and streamlining  our Translational Medicine data flow; along with providing our scientists with FAIR data assets for their experimental work. As part of a cross-functional team of science, data and technology experts you will help shape our data centricity vision by bringing in your innovative ideas and novel approach to rethink the way we manage, treat, handle and govern data. You will use your understanding on current data gaps to improve and automate our data flow which will include; setting up standards, vocabularies and workflows while working hand in hand with our data curators, data governance experts and software development teams. You will drive communication, training and education to re-shape Translational Medicine data culture.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate/ supervise data curation/ operations efforts (setup and planning, stakeholder interaction, coordination between scientists, curators and engineers)

  • Work together with data curators/ engineers to identify opportunities for standardization within the current translational medicine data flow, translate these into technical requirements, templates, standards, vocabularies and drive implementation

  • Develop and implement new data standards, vocabularies and workflows together with our data curators, data scientists, scientists to prospectively streamline data flow and operations

  • Coordinate and streamline data transfer, exchange and integration activities with Translational Medicine collaboration partners, CROs etc.

  • Work with bioinformaticians, data scientist and data management teams to develop best practices in data wrangling/curation and storage of experimental metadata

  • Identify opportunities for training/ education and drive/ support development of training and communication material

Essential for the role

  • Data science, Bioinformatics (Master level, preferably PhD) with a focus on Life Science/ Pharma R&D or biology/ science background (Master level, preferably PhD) with extensive expertise in (big) data management

  • Expertise in data curation/management, linking and integrating data from different entities (clinical, pathology, genomics etc.)

  • Experience in project management, coordination of mid-size cross-functional teams

  • Thorough understanding of formats, standards and metadata requirements of digital pathology data, genomics data, other –omics data; experience in the setup of data standards, vocabularies and taxonomies

  • Understanding of the FAIR data principles and how they apply to the delivery of integrated X-Omics solutions

  • Experienced working within cross-functional teams, including scientists, data experts, software development engineers and IT

  • Strong communication and presentation skills and a proactive mindset and motivation to drive and implement own ideas


 

Desirable for the role

  • Experience with agile/scrum operations and planning as well as usage of Jira, Confluence

  • Experience with common biomedical vocabularies (Gene Ontology, NCI Thesaurus, ISA-Tab, MeSH, Human Disease Onotolgy, BAO, EFO, Human Phenotype Ontology, others), ontology repositories (NCBO Bioportal, EBI OLS) and common reference databases (e.g. Uniprot, Ensembl, CHEMBL, EntrezGene, ClinicalTrials.gov).
