Position: Assistant Manager, Sustainable Operations (North East Asia)

Reporting to: Manager, Sustainable Operations (North East Asia)

Department: Responsible Sourcing, Sustainable Operations



Work Location: Shanghai/Guangzhou, China


Key Purpose of the Job:

The Assistant Manager, Sustainable Operations North East Asia is accountable for leading a team that drives results for VF’s Responsible Sourcing department in China, Korea, and Japan. Partnering with key VF factories to drive improvements in all responsible sourcing topics, including worker safety, chemistry, environmental sustainability, traceability, Worker and Community Development, and government engagement. The Manager will also be responsible for recruiting and managing regional staff to achieve results. This position is a key leader for all Responsible Sourcing activities in North East Asia.


Key Areas of Management for Regional Team:



Worker Rights and Safety & Post-Audit Support

Support strategic VF factories to remediate issues and build capacity in order to align with “Critical Life Safety” requirements and VF Factory Compliance requirements ( e.g. delivery of training to factory, assist the development of Corrective Action Plan, serving as consultant to CSR relevant policy development & implementation in the factory)

  • Support VF’s critical life safety program at factory locations by building awareness and management systems to address key electrical, fire, and safety issues. ( e.g. develop & delivery training to factory, helping factory to roll out the life safety program in the factory)

  • Work with factories to remediate issues identified during VF Factory Compliance Audit, and build capacity to ensure long term effectiveness of solutions

  • Coordinate with VF employees based at strategic factories in order to ensure VF values are being monitored by all VF staff that engage with factories


Human Rights

  • This position will assist VF in its efforts to combat forced labor and human rights throughout the supply chain by collecting data on recruiting processes and practices of factories and labor agencies.

  • The role will ensure the rights of workers are protected through ongoing awareness training to factory management and directly to workers.


Environmental Sustainability

In coordination with Environmental Sustainability leaders at VF –

  • Ensure factory location’s understanding of Higg Index Environmental .

  • Review and evaluate Higg Index Environmental assessments

  • Perform gap/root-cause analysis on factory location’s environmental performance based on Higg Index Environmental

  • Build agreed HIGG index targets and a road map for the factory to reach the target.

  • Ensure factory is in compliance with VF Global Wastewater Policy

  • Drive improved environmental sustainability performance at factory locations by proactively working with factory management to build Management Systems.

  • In collaboration with consultants and various programs, improve resource efficiency (energy, water, chemicals) at strategic Tier-1 and Tier-2 factories

  • Maintain awareness of key sustainability trends

Worker and Community Development

  • Build, through research and external support, a comprehensive understanding of the worker livelihood challenges in their local community.

  • Develop a Worker and Community Development (WCD) approach, based on VF’s Responsible Sourcing strategies, to continuously improve workers’ livelihood

  • Facilitate the WCD projects to drive well-being in communities

  • Regularly review performance with factory and VF management, along with workers themselves, to ensure the WCD programs are improving the workers lives and creating value at the factory.


Compliance and Life Safety

  • Support VF compliance department to build awareness at factory locations about VF audit protocol. ( Such as, delivery of training to factory, assist the development of Corrective Action Plan, serving as consultant to CSR relevant policy development & implementation in the factory)

  • Support VF’s life safety programs at factory locations by building awareness and management systems to address key electrical, fire, and safety issues. ( Such as, develop & delivery training to factory, helping factory to roll out the life safety program in the factory)

  • Provide assistance and training to VF Factory Improvement Coordinators assigned to Responsible Sourcing Specialist’s factory locations.


Traceability

  • Support Product and Raw Material Stewardship department’s objectives regarding traceability of product and raw materials at factory locations ( such as data verification through on-site visits, helping factory to roll out the relevant programs)

Chemistry

  • Provide training and capacity building to support factory with implementation of VF’s Chem-IQ program.

  • Reporting to Product and Raw Material Stewardship department for Chem-IQ implementation.




Major Challenge:

Significant travel to factory locations within China (including Taiwan), Korea, and Japan and occasional additional international travel required.

Required Special Skills:

Minimum Relevant Experience: 6-8 years or above

Minimum Supervisory Experience: 3+

Minimum Academic Requirement: Bachelor or above

Major Subject: Foreign Language, Business Administration, Industrial safety, Environmental management, Industrial Engineering

Required Professional Qualification:

1. Wrap certified auditor is plus

2. Certified external / internal auditor of ISO 14001 is plus
