Summary: The U.S. Mission in Shanghai is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Agricultural Marketing Specialist.


The work schedule for this position is:

  • Full Time (40 hours per week)

Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.


Supervisory Position: No


Duties: This Agricultural Marketing Specialist position serves as an expert advisor on food and agricultural marketing in China; closely monitoring Chinese consumer preferences and promotion opportunities. The Agricultural Marketing Specialist drafts marketing plans for major market sectors and design, organizes, supervises and manages marketing and promotional activities with a wide degree of latitude for decision-making. The Agricultural Marketing Specialist assists in developing and planning international trade missions, trade shows, and guides U.S. industry representatives and their strategic plans to expand U.S. agricultural and food market share in China. Responsibilities also include promoting U.S. agricultural exports by implementing innovative and effective marketing projects and initiatives that engage foreign consumers, retailers, and importers. The Agricultural Marketing Specialist also collaborates with representatives of U.S. agricultural interests to expand U.S. market share and presence in ATO (Agricultural Trade Office) Shanghai's covered district, one of the largest port destination for U.S. food and agricultural exports. This Agricultural Marketing Specialist cultivates a wide range of very senior-level government and trade contacts, and providing U.S. government and trade representatives with advice on trade and sales opportunities with minimal supervision from the Director and Deputy Director. Furthermore, the Agricultural Marketing Specialist oversees assigned U.S. trade association activities within the context of these activities, and interacts with U.S. companies interested in exporting to China.


Qualifications and Evaluations

Education: Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: Business, Trade, Agriculture, Marketing, International Relations or equivalent sub-fields (logistics, business English, agricultural marketing, trade policy, etc.) is required.


Requirements:

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in one or more fields of commodity trade and marketing analysis/research that includes significant analysis, and report writing is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have an expert understanding of agricultural practices, market conditions, and government policies in China.


Evaluations:


LANGUAGE: Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing in English is required. (This will be tested.) Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing in Chinese is required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must provide customer service, professionalism, economic and quantitative analysis, innovation, good judgment, effective communication, organizing and planning, teamwork, English and Mandarin language, and writing skills.
  • Must have basic economic and accounting skills as the incumbent must be able to interpret trade data and manage budgets, and have proven ability to conduct negotiations or discussions with senior executives of other organizations, to manage multiple projects, and to meet tight deadlines.

Qualifications: All applicants under consideration will be required to pass medical and security certifications.

The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service. ** This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
