Residential Camp Counselor
The 4-H Camps at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally focused summer camps for Maine youth in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Programs emphasize community living, respect for others, fun, safety, responsibility, and the joy of being a part of the natural world. Our mission is to teach and inspire people from Maine and beyond to be effective and caring citizens of the earth through affordable environmental education and fun nature-based experiences. We strive to develop lifelong skills and a sense of community spirit.
Staff work in teams to plan and lead morning mastery programs (creative arts, STEM, archery, general ecology, gardening & cooking, marine ecology, primitive skills, 4-H Hunter Safety, conservation education, and drama are examples). Regardless of your role, all staff are mentors first and foremost to our future leaders!
Responsibilities:
- Live in a cabin with campers and, along with a co-counselor, create the necessary atmosphere for a positive camp experience. (staff/camper ratio = 1:4). Some programs are housed at remote camping sites on property with staff operating in more of a backcountry setting.
- Role model healthy living, positive energy, and clear communication
- Engage actively with campers during program activities, cabin times, meal times
- Co-coordinate, implement and evaluate a hands-on curriculum for youth in a week-long, morning program using the learning objectives set forth by UMaine 4-H Camps.
- Organize displays, projects, resource materials and supplies, which will serve to stimulate campers, parents, and staff
- Help to plan and carry out other camp activities such as elective programming, special events, opening and closing ceremonies, evening programs, campfires, etc
- Role model good stewardship for the environment.
- Participate in staff meetings, community chores, meal service, and miscellaneous maintenance duties as required to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the camp
Qualifications:
- Motivation to work with children in a high energy, outdoor setting
- Role model conservation ethic, healthy living, positive energy and clear communication.
- Must demonstrate responsible and safe decision-making skills in all aspects of outdoor camp programming.
- Flexible, creative, team player, appreciate the natural world
- Self-motivated, able to both lead and follow
- Previous camp or related experience working with youth
- Ability to lead groups outdoors over various terrain (camp trails and facility), carrying a small backpack with teaching and first aid supplies
- First Aid and basic life support certification (CPR) or ability to get certification before start date
- Preferred: lifeguard certification
Dates:
- Lead Educators: June 12-August 17
- All staff: June 16-August 17 (start of staff training for all staff)
Compensation:
- $215-$275/week (pre-tax) pay range dependent on experience, background, and certifications.
